    Emulating opportunistic networks with KauNet Triggers

    In opportunistic networks the availability of an end-to-end path is no longer required. Instead opportunistic networks may take advantage of temporary connectivity opportunities. Opportunistic networks present a demanding environment for network emulation as the traditional emulation setup, where application/transport endpoints only send and receive packets from the network following a black box approach, is no longer applicable. Opportunistic networking protocols and applications additionally need to react to the dynamics of the underlying network beyond what is conveyed through the exchange of packets. In order to support IP-level emulation evaluations of applications and protocols that react to lower layer events, we have proposed the use of emulation triggers. Emulation triggers can emulate arbitrary cross-layer feedback and can be synchronized with other emulation effects. After introducing the design and implementation of triggers in the KauNet emulator, we describe the integration of triggers with the DTN2 reference implementation and illustrate how the functionality can be used to emulate a classical DTN data-mule scenario

    Catalytic Membrane Reactor: Multilayer membranes elaboration

    International audienceMethane conversion to syngas is very attractive for hydrogen or clean fuel production and provides an alternative to oil products. An efficient architecture for the membrane reactor is constituted of a porous support, a thin dense membrane and a catalyst layer. This work is focused on the elaboration process of such asymmetric membranes by co-sintering of at least the porous support and the dense membrane and specially the choice of well adapted materials. La0.8Sr0.2Fe0.7Ga0.3O3-δ perovskite material has been chosen as the dense membrane because it exhibits a good compromise between oxygen flux and stability. The choice of the material for the porous support is mainly oriented by the sintering behaviour of the membrane, the thermal expansion behaviour of both layers to avoid cracks formation under working conditions and the chemical inertness of both materials. Several formulations fulfilling these three requirements were synthesized by liquid phase reaction and tape-cast. A pore forming agent was added in the support tapecasting slurry in order to create a controlled porosity. Then, the porous support has been characterized in term of gas permeability and thermal expansion under working conditions.     International audienceDense ceramic membranes made from mixed conductors are interesting because of their potential applications formethane conversion into syngas (H2 and CO mixture). Such membranes need to present a low differential dimensional variation between the opposite faces submitted to a large gradient of oxygen partial pressure, in order to minimize mechanical stresses generated through the membrane thickness. Besides, high oxygen permeability is required for high methane reforming rate. La(1−x)SrxFe(1−y)GayO3−δ materials fulfil these two main requirements and were retained as membranes in catalytic membrane reactors (CMR). The variations of expansion and oxygen permeation of La(1−x)SrxFe(1−y)GayO3−δ perovskite materials with the partial substitution of lanthanum and iron cations, temperature and oxygen partial pressure, were studied. For low temperatures (800 ◦C), TEC, then dimensional stability of the membrane, and oxygen permeation of La(1−x)SrxFe(1−y)GayO3−δ materials, are significantly affected by Sr content and oxygen partial pressure. Ga has a stabilisation effect on the TEC and has no influence on oxygen permeation flux.     Age-Dependent Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in the NF-κB/c-Rel Knockout Mouse Model of Parkinson’s Disease

    Non-motor symptoms are frequently observed in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and precede the onset of motor deficits by years. Among them, neuropsychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and apathy, are increasingly considered as a major challenge for patients with PD and their caregivers. We recently reported that mice lacking the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)/c-Rel protein (c-rel–/– mice) develop an age-dependent PD-like pathology and phenotype characterized by the onset of non-motor symptoms, including constipation and hyposmia, starting at 2 months of age, and motor deficits at 18 months. To assess whether c-rel–/– mice also suffer from neuropsychiatric symptoms, in this study we tested different cohorts of wild-type (wt) and c-rel–/– mice at 3, 6, 12, and 18–20 months with different behavioral tests. Mice lacking c-Rel displayed anxiety and depressive-like behavior starting in the premotor phase at 12 months, as indicated by the analysis with the open field (OF) test and the forced swim test with water wheel (FST), respectively. A deficit in the goal-oriented nesting building test was detected at 18–20 months, suggesting apathetic behavior. Taken together, these results indicate that c-rel–/– mice recapitulate the onset and the progression of PD-related neuropsychiatric symptoms. Therefore, this animal model may represent a valuable tool to study the prodromal stage of PD and for testing new therapeutic strategies to alleviate neuropsychiatric symptoms

    Broad-band X-ray spectral evolution of GX 339-4 during a state transition

    We report on X-ray and soft gamma-ray observations of the black-hole candidate GX 339-4 during its 2007 outburst, performed with the RXTE and INTEGRAL satellites. The hardness-intensity diagram of all RXTE/PCA data combined shows a q-shaped track similar to that observed in previous outbursts.The evolution in the diagram suggested that a transition from hard-intermediate state to soft-intermediate state occurred, simultaneously with INTEGRAL observations performed in March. The transition is confirmed by the timing analysis presented in this work, which reveals that a weak type-A quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) replaces a strong type-C QPO. At the same time, spectral analysis shows that the flux of the high-energy component shows a significant decrease in its flux. However, we observe a delay (roughly one day) between variations of the spectral parameters of the high-energy component and changes in the flux and timing properties. The changes in the high-energy component can be explained either in terms the high-energy cut-off or in terms of a variations in the reflection component.     El objetivo del presente trabajo fue explicar la relación entre factores curriculares y las actitudes hacia la  promoción de la salud, que tienen los estudiantes de medicina de la Universidad de Caldas, entre los años  2002 y 2003 en la ciudad de Manizales. Se calculó una muestra de 230 estudiantes, de los cuales se aplicó una encuesta y una escala Liker a 173. Además se realizaron 4 grupos focales y el análisis documental de los  principios del currículo oficial de programa de medicina y del plan de estudios. Se encontró que el 66.5% de  los estudiantes presentó actitud indiferente hacia la promoción de la salud, el 15% actitud positiva y actitud  muy positiva el 2.9%; para el 13.9% la actitud fue negativa y muy negativa para el 1.7 %. Las materias de las  áreas básica, clínicas, quirúrgicas y de salud mental, presentan enfoque mórbido excepto las asignaturas de  pediatría, pues son las únicas que involucran componentes como promoción de la salud en la formación del  estudiante. Los hallazgos demuestran que los currículos oficial y oculto fortalecen la formación clínica y  reproducen la impronta institucional que ha tenido el programa, lo que podría explicar la actitud indiferente  hacia la promoción de la salud.The objective of this work was to explain the relationship between the curricular factors and attitudes  towards health promotion of the medicine students at the Universidad de Caldas between 2002 and 2003 in  the city of Manizales. A sample of 230 students was estimated, from which a poll was applied to 173 in the  Liker scale. Additionally, four focal groups were organized, and the documental analysis was carried out of  the official curricular principles of the Medicine Program, and of the study plan. It was found that 66.5% of  the students showed an indifferent attitude towards health promotion, 15% showed a positive attitude and  2.9% showed a very positive attitude; 13.9% showed a negative attitude and 1.7% showed a very negative  attitude. The courses in the basic areas, clinical, surgical and mental health show a morbid focus except for  the Pediatric courses which involve components of health promotion in the integral formation of the  students. The findings show that the official and hidden curricula strengthen the clinical formation and  reproduce the institutional profile of the program, which could explain the indifference towards the health  promotion

    Plasma Cell-Free DNA Integrity Assessed by Automated Electrophoresis Predicts the Achievement of Pathologic Complete Response to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Breast Cancer

    PURPOSE The study of plasma cell-free DNA integrity (cfDI) has shown potential for providing useful information in neoplastic patients. The aim of this study is to estimate the accuracy of an electrophoresis-based method for cfDI evaluation in the assessment of pathologic complete response (pCR) in patients with breast cancer (BC) undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifty-one patients with BC undergoing anthracycline-/taxane-based NACT were recruited. Plasma samples were collected from each patient at diagnosis (t0), after anthracycline administration (t1), and after NACT completion (t2). The concentration of differently sized cell-free DNA fragments was assessed by automated electrophoresis. cfDI, expressed as cfDI index, was calculated as the ratio of 321-1,000 bp sized fragment concentration to 150-220 bp sized fragment concentration assessed at t2. cfDI index was then used to build an exploratory classifier for BC response to NACT, directly comparing its sensitivity and specificity with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), through bootstrapped logistic regression. RESULTS cfDI index was assessed on 38 plasma samples collected from as many patients at t2, maintaining a 30/70 ratio between pCR and non-pCR patients. cfDI index showed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve in predicting the achievement of pCR of 81.6, with a cutoff above 2.71 showing sensitivity = 81.8 and specificity = 81.5. The combination of cfDI index and MRI showed, in case of concordance, an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 92.6 with a predictive value of complete response of 87.5 and a predictive value of absence of complete response of 94.7. CONCLUSION cfDI index measured after NACT completion shows great potential in the assessment of pCR in patients with BC. The evaluation of its use in combination with MRI is strongly warranted in prospective studies

    Has VZV epidemiology changed in Italy? Results of a seroprevalence study

    The aim of the study was to evaluate if and how varicella prevalence has changed in Italy. In particular a seroprevalence study was performed, comparing it to similar surveys conducted in pre-immunization era. During 2013–2014, sera obtained from blood samples taken for diagnostic purposes or routine investigations were collected in collaboration with at least one laboratory/center for each region, following the approval of the Ethics Committee. Data were stratified by sex and age. All samples were processed in a national reference laboratory by an immunoassay with high sensitivity and specificity. Statutory notifications, national hospital discharge database and mortality data related to VZV infection were analyzed as well. A total of 3707 sera were collected and tested. In the studied period both incidence and hospitalization rates decreased and about 5 deaths per year have been registered. The seroprevalence decreased in the first year of life in subjects passively protected by their mother, followed by an increase in the following age classes. The overall antibody prevalence was 84%. The comparison with surveys conducted with the same methodology in 1996–1997 and 2003–2004 showed significant differences in age groups 1–19 y. The study confirms that in Italy VZV infection typically occurs in children. The impact of varicella on Italian population is changing. The comparison between studies performed in different periods shows a significant increase of seropositivity in age class 1–4 years, expression of vaccine interventions already adopted in some regions
